* The point is only strengthened if O’Donovan (2009) is correct in his claim that “the use of the word [‘rights’] in the plural is not found in the ancient world ” (195). More specifically, he states that “Phantom ‘rights’ spring up liberally across pages translated from Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, corresponding to no plural noun in the original. The unwary may be led by the translators of the Revised Standard Version Bible to discover ‘rights’ in Proverbs 31: 8–9 and Jeremiah 5: 28, where the Hebrew noun in both cases is a singular” (197).
